The town of Monsaraz sits atop the highest hill in the region and is one of the oldest Portugese settlements of southern portugal, having been occupied since pre-history, something which the many megalithic monuments surrounding it testify. There are many sights in and around the small town, including the Megalithic monuments of Herdade de Xerez, the Menhir of Abelhoa, the Church of Nossa Senhora de lagoa and the Castle Keep of Monsaraz.
