The heavily fortified city of Elvas has an obvious military history. It has four curtain walls: two islamic, one from the 14th century and finally bulwarked fortifications which surround the historical centre. Outside of the fortifications, two forts guard the city: the Forte de Santa Luzia and the Forte da Graça. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da assunção church stands in the town centre, as does a midevil tower. At the westside of the city, you can find the Aqueduto da Amoreira, a 9 km long aqueduct.
