The Monsaraz skies are uniquely protected against light pollution, meaning that on clear, moonless nights, the milkyway is clearly visible, making for a spectacular sight. In fact, the skies here are so ideal for stargazing that a few kilometers from the house, at the foot of the hill of Castelo de Monsaraz, lies the Observatório do Lago Alqueva. This location lies inside of the Dark Sky Reserve in Alentejo, one of the areas in Europe most protected against light polution. It is a popular spot for astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts alike and well worth a visit.
